Read Now: Fundamentals Of Organic Poultry Farming In Nigeria (1)

This post will be giving an insight into the last two modules of the training; Supplement Making in Organic Poultry Farming and Becoming an Effective Organic Poultry Agriprenuer. Questions and answers from the training are included at the end of this post.

MODULE 5: SUPPLEMENTS MAKING

In Organic Poultry, these are the things we make use of when we say herbs and supplements;

Phytobiotics: is inclusive of plants/herbs we also use in tackling some disease that arises from poultry as well as preventing them. They include;

  • Bitter leaf
  • Cayenne pepper (Ata rodo)
  • Scent leaf.
  • Christmas melon
  • Apple (cider)
  • Cucumber
    Prebiotics are inclusive etc.

A lot of plants have different uses in organic poultry. Pawpaw leaves, alfalfa, just name it. The most important thing about this system is that some of these plants and herbs are sourced within our localities to raise strong, healthy, and fast-growing birds. For us to eat healthily and stay healthy.

LAB works as an anti-bacterial and prevents infection from occurring. We have to populate the growing diets and environment of the birds with these bacteria. It is a beneficial bacteria that do the work for you.

Over the course of my journey into organic poultry farming, we have discovered a new way of making LAB even more potent. Probiotics, here, is the live culture used in improving birds’ digestive systems. We call it LAB ( Lactic Acid Bacteria). Typically of the type we consume when we take yoghurt.

Prebiotics: involve the spices/herbs used to improve the bird’s immune system. They work hand in hand with probiotics. In Organic Poultry, prebiotics is a must to achieve healthy birds. They include;

  1. Ginger
  2. Garlic
  3. Onion.
  4. Turmeric etc.

Probiotics: There is nothing as good as your birds having the best possible treats growing up. Probiotic that we called LAB (Lactic Acid Bacteria) is one of the best approaches for you to keep the birds healthy. Many of us will be familiar with the production of many of our training. But I will show us how to best fortify our LAB with herbal extracts. It also promotes growths and enhances the overall development of the birds. With LAB, the disease can hardly have any role to play on your farm.

The popular supplements we use as prebiotics and probiotics are called:

  1. ACV – apple cider vinegar
  2. MVC- multivitamin calcium
  3. Ginger garlic serum
  4. Lactobacillus serum

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR:
All you need is just water and apples. Chop into smaller pieces. Put the chopped apples into a glass jar and fill with water. Not to the brim, leave some airspace for fermentation. After 3weeks, you have your apple cider vinegar. After 4 weeks all apple would be at the bottom.10/12 apples will give you 4litres of AVC.

apple cider

Apple Cider Vinegar is acidic and you should only put it into plastic water containers to prevent corrosion.

MULTIVITAMIN AND CALCIUM SUPPLEMENT (MVC):
This is a powerful electrolyte that is served directly in water for the birds. It also contains roasted eggshells which serve as soluble calcium phosphate. Commercial feed is of various quality and some do not contain the required calcium needed by the birds, hence your bird may suffer paralysis as a result of weight gain. However, some cases of paralysis may not be related to calcium deficiency. With this MVC, you are covered if you find yourself in possession of such feed.

PREPARATION:
All you need are some carrots, cucumber, pawpaw, watermelon, dates or tiger nuts, banana, pineapple.
Pound or blend the roasted ground eggshells
After 2days, pour the remaining fruit juice into the one you added eggshells.
The bubbles and shimmering will no longer be there. Now, this is your multivitamin and calcium supplement.
Pour into a bottle and close loosely. Keep away from sunlight.

GINGER GARLIC SERUM:
Get equal parts of unwashed ginger 1kg to 1 kg garlic and blend in 2L of water. Ferment for 5 days in an anaerobic state. (Airtight) harvest and sieve. Add 500mls molasses and keep in a food-grade container out of sunlight.

LACTOBACILLUS SERUM:
This is an awesome organic product which is also called EM1, rich in lactic acid bacteria that produces enzymes and natural antibiotics aiding plants and animals immune system. It enhances nutrients assimilation, eliminates toxins and enhances plant and animal growth. These special products do not allow the development of a disease-causing organism.

To make the wash, rinse the rice in water, the water left after rinsing, is the carbohydrate wash. This wash will attract microbes from the air, among them lactobacilli.
Steps:

  1. Make a Carbohydrate Wash: You can make a carbohydrate wash using sources of complex carbohydrates like rice, wheat, barley etc. Mark the words “complex carbohydrate”. Don’t use simple carbohydrates like sugar, honey, syrup, molasses, etc. I use rice.🍚
  2. Put some rice into a jar 2cups of water
  3. To make the wash, rinse the rice in water, the water left after rinsing is the carbohydrate wash. This wash will attract microbes from the air, among them lactobacilli.
  4. Cover the carbohydrate wash loosely and let it stand for a couple of days (48hrs-72hrs). The actual number of days depends on temperature. Microbes grow faster in warmer temperature, therefore the warmer the temperature the lesser the number of days you’ll have to wait.

i. Top layer: Consists of main carbohydrates leftover from fermentation and possibly moulds.
ii. Middle layer: This is the layer we use. It consists of lactic acid and other bacteria
iii. Bottom layer: Contains starch – a byproduct of fermentation. At this stage, enough microbes have established themselves in the wash.

5. Extract the middle layer using a siphon.

Adding Milk & Fermenting

  1. Now you’ve extracted the middle layer (Lacto serum), put it in a new container larger than the first and add 10 parts milk to it (e.g. if you have 1 cup of serum, add 10 cups of milk to it). The milk, which contains a lot of lactose, will prevent other microbes from multiplying, leaving only Lactobacillus to multiply.
  2. During fermentation, there will be a lot of bubbling and this can lead to overflows if you don’t use a large enough container. To prevent this, the top level of the liquid should not be close to the top of the container. It is rich in lactic acid bacteria from the milk fermentation. The yellow liquid under is what you need as mentioned above.
  3. Before you extract the yellow water under, if there is a mould of any of colour on the milk, please dispose the whole thing. You have unwanted bacteria in your LAB. Please don’t continue or give to the chicken.

Preservation:

To preserve the yellow liquid at room temperature, add an equal part of brown sugar or molasses to it. For example, if you have 1L of serum, add 1kilo sugar or 1L molasses, otherwise, store in a fridge.

MODULE 6: BECOMING AN EFFECTIVE ORGANIC POULTRY AGRIPRENEUR

People who have startups in agriculture can be called an Agripreneur. Agripreneur word is a combination of Agriculture + Entrepreneur. Any person who starts something new in the agriculture sector and converts it to a business will be called an Agrpreneur. Source: google

In Organic Poultry we advise and propagate to new farmers to improve value addition methods along with their poultry farming. They can be off-takers from fellow farmers, processors, packaged product marketers and many more.

The keyword here is a partnership. Partnership with organic network group, farms, certification bodies and many more.

Questions: Umaru Rasheed. Pls sir how long does a broiler chick need heat? And how long should they stay in the brooding room?
Response: We usually advise that broiler chicks be in their heated brooders for 14-18 days. The pen temperature monitoring should be continuous no matter the age of the bird.

Question: I am Hajia Maryam. Some trainers recommend wheat offal or rice bran as bedding. Is that ok instead of the wood shavings?
Response: In my experience as an integrated farmer, I have come to the conclusion that the use of feed material as a litter material is a NO! NO! for me. Ask me why?

Chicks are like little children. Imagine placing cookies on the toilet seats of your house and you expect your child to ignore it because it is sitting on the toilet seat. Organic poultry is more of preventive management than curative.

We change bedding on time and do not encourage our birds to eat their litters. Thus, we do not use poultry feed component as beddings.

Question: What is LAB
Response: Lab is a probiotic called the lactobacillus serum

Question: Do I blend the prebiotics or soak in water or throw it at the chicks and at what stage? Thanks.
Response: There is an organic herbal schedule which we give at the paid farm practical training where farmers follow this schedule by administering supplements like the conventional farmers.

Question: Maxi farms. How can I prepare organic feeds?
Response: Organic feed making takes expertise and is not advisable for all classes of birds. Organic feeds are best served to noilers, ducks, turkeys and guineafowl. You must have been trained on the farm to identify the right smell, look and administration of the organic feed.

Question: Dinah Inyang. Do you have to have to prepare the probiotics before bringing in the chicks?
Response: Yes, all supplements are to be on the ground before chick arrival.

Question: What organic herb can I use to supplement Lasota for laying birds?
Response: A Lasota alternative in laying birds is a combination of christmas melon, aloe vera and lab serum.
