Trocarization
Trocarization is a procedure whereby a trocar and cannula are inserted through the abdominal wall and into the rumen.
Indications of trocarization
- Emergency treatment of ruminal tympany (bloat).
- Treatment of chronic ruminal tympany (chronic bloat).
Advantages
- A straightforward technique to carry out.
- Rapid procedure that may save the animal’s life in emergency situations.
- The process can be done while the animal is still on the farm.
Disadvantages
- Because of lack of expertise, severe ruminal distension may result in the inappropriate placement of the trocar and therefore cannula.
- Inappropriate placement can result in ingesta contaminating the abdomen and subsequent development of severe complicating conditions.
Note: Trocarization should always be carried out by an experienced individual to avoid further pain to the animal.
Useful tips while using cattle trocar
- It is important to know the insertion point of the trocar and cannula within the cattle. It is usually inserted at the left paralumbar fossa where the “hollow” of the flank is found.
- It is very important that the whole procedure is supervised by a competent individual.
- If the rumen content contains a lot of foam, gas relief may be impeded and you may need a defoaming agent. The defoaming agent can be added through the trocar.
- Examples of defoaming agents are emulsified oil (mineral oil) or oil containing an approved detergent such as dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate.
- Before you use trocar and cannula, be sure that a stomach tube or bloat needles cannot be sufficient for relieving the bloat (except in emergency cases).
- Prompt veterinary attention should be consulted in cases of potential complicating conditions after trocarization (e.g. leakage of rumen contents into the abdomen).
