220px-ARS_cucumberCucumbers are extremely sensitive to cold temperatures, they grow best when given full sunlight in their growing process.

Sunlight is very important as a source of nutrition for cucumber plants, stable sunlight will imply consistent warm soil, which the seeds need in order to germinate.

When selecting site, consider the temperature.

Steps for Cultivating Cucumber

  • Clear the land and remove all weed before you plant your cucumbers. For best results, pull the weeds up with your hand, pull up as much of the root as possible
  • Avoid the use of herbicides, because it can make the soil inapt for plant (cucumber) growth
  • Fertilize the soil before you begin planting cucumbers
  • Loose the soil by mixing the fertilizers more thoroughly while also creating ideal conditions for your cucumbers for root penetration
  • Rich compose or decay manures are the best fertilizers to use for cucumbers
  • Ensure that the pH of the soil is balanced (preferably, the pH of the soil should be fairly neutral-slightly alkaline, that is, pH level close to 7.0)
  • Avoid excessively sandy soil, because the cucumber plants will struggle to survive in it
  • The best soil to plant cucumbers is loose, light, and sandy, since these soils get warmer quicker and stay warm more easily
  • Choose the best variety for your garden
  • Cucumbers have very fragile root systems, it is preferable to plant seeds in the garden directly than transplanting
  • Moisten the soil if it is dry, before planting
  • Push seeds slightly into the soil about 1 inch into the top of the soil
  • The plantings should be about 45.72 to 92.44 cm apart, whether you are planting seeds or seedlings
  • Cucumbers generally, require support to grow, especially vine varieties, use trellis/cage trellis, stake, fence, or any other vertical structure after planting the seed to support their growth
  • Direct the vines on the cage trellis as they grow
  • Mulch as soon as the seedlings sprout up
  • Dark mulch is very good at keeping the soil warm and moist
  • Cucumbers require plenty of moisture, so you need to water the plants deeply and regularly
  • Apply placid liquid fertilizer (preferably, organic fertilizers) every two weeks
  • Prevent the leaves from turning yellow, but if it does apply high nitrogen fertilizer (do not over fertilize the plants)
  • Shield the plants away from animals by using netting and fence, this is important during the early stages of growth but remove netting once the plants get too tall
  • Prevent pests (cucumber beetles, white flies, aphids, spider mites) and diseases (Bacterial wilt, mosaic viruses, anthracnose, downy and powdery mildew) disease from invading your farm by using organic insecticide or fungicide
  • Harvest the cucumbers when it is ready.
